I have a lot of wheezing in late p.m. and early a.m. Is this an allergy?

It is very hard for me to breath.  It is actually physically straining.  This happens to me every winter and my PCP says there is nothing wrong with me.  I cant sleep at night because I am straining so hard to get a single breathe.
