Food Allergies a way to get out of eating unwanted food?

I came across an article in the Huffington Post today (I don’t usually read the Huffington Post, but I was looking for any new food allergy news) about whether or not to drink around an alcoholic. At first the article didn’t appear to have anything to do with food allergies….And it doesn’t except for one sentence. One sentence that made me fume inside.
Here it is : “A lot of us have friends who irritate us with their “food allergies,” which is oft code for “I don’t like this or that.” This is not the case with alcoholics who are, we hope, recovering from a disease.”
Mr Petrow, is writing a manners column, but he doesn’t seem to have much in the way of manners himself. I can’t believe that people are still this ignorant. What is it going to take to make people understand that food allergies are real and life threateningly serious??
Read the article and give me your opinion….am I overreacting?
