Could an allergy to sugar be causing my swollen ankles and leg pain?

Posted by blueeyes

I have had all sorts of tests for everything and I am fine apart from my thyroid being a bit low.  I am on thyroid meds now and the pain and swelling is still persisting.  I am scared to eat anything as I really think something I am eating is causing it.  Can you give me some suggestions please?

Funny thing! I have had horrible swelling in my lower legs below the calves and my feet and ankles for almost 5 years.  I was prescribed a diuretic as far back as then and have been taking it ever since.  About 4 months ago I had a flare-up of a chronic muscular illness with which I live and try to manage without medications. I chose to resume steroid treatment until the symptoms calmed. With the initial full dosage my legs miracuously reduced to what I would call normal size!!!!  Sadly, when weening from the steroid the edema returned.  As is typical of steroid usage I had gained some weight and although I really do think that I eat a very good diet(whole grains, adequate fruits, lots of greens and range free and organic meats and dairy whenever we can find them) the one place I could make a change was cream in my coffee - about 3 full cups a day. 10 days ago I simply took it out. The result is amazing. My feet, ankles and lower legs are normal size, but now I see that my calves and knees had also been swelling. Thankfully they are reducing as well and I plan to not resume using cream for as long as I am edema-free.
