Can Omega-3 fatty acids increase your life span?

Posted Jan 22 2010 12:00am
I'd like to highlight an interesting article that has just been published on omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish oils.  The article was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Vol. 303 Number 3 January 20, 2010 issue and is titled "Association of Marine Omega-3 Fatty Acid Levels With Telomeric Aging in Patients With Coronary Heart Disease".  The authors concluded: "Among this cohort of patients with coronary artery disease, there was an inverse relationship between baseline blood levels of marine omega-3 fatty acids and the rate of telomere shortening over 5 years.Telomeres are the pieces on the ends of DNA which prevent the DNA from deterioration.  (By the way, the 2009 Nobel prize in Medicine was awarded for work on telomeres.)  For me, this adds more evidence to the currently accepted knowledge on the importance of omega-3 fatty acids.  I recommend all adults consider adding and increasing omega-3 fatty acids to their diets.
