Understanding Alcoholism for What It Is — a Brain Disease

This morning’s KQED Quest program , “The Search for Alcoholism’ Miracle Drug,” shared a number of things that may help listeners of KQED and readers of this blog better understand alcoholism for what it is — a brain disease. Not only that, but because each person’s brain is different for a number of reasons — not the least of which is genetics, this program will help listeners and readers better appreciate that there is no one right way to “do” treatment for alcoholism.
It’s a short program — 10 minutes or so — and well worth the listen if you are someone who struggles with controlling your behaviors while drinking, someone who loves someone who has that struggle, or a member of society at large — collectively understanding this will help all of us appreciate alcoholism for what it is — a complex, often relapsing brain disease; a disease, that like all other diseases, can successfully be treated when the “right” treatment is provided and followed.
