Alright my friends here we go again. I am on the road for my second tournament as a caddy. My “boss” thought I did a good enough job that he asked me to come to the next stop in a different state. I must admit that somebody thinking that I have some sort of incredible “skill” is really cool. Who would have thought that my ability to read putting greens would get me an all expenses paid trip and get paid for carrying a golf bag. I can’t believe that I’m writing this post from the luxury of a very nice hotel that somebody else paid for. Just nuts!
I woke up yesterday morning at 3:30 am to be able to get to the golf course in time for the practice round. This was a first for me because last week I asked the guy if I could carry his bag and didn’t take part of the practice round. Heck, matter of fact, I had never set foot on that golf course before that day either. Apparently that was a very impressive thing for my golfer too. He couldn’t believe that I could read those greens without ever playing the course before. Like I said, this is all so crazy.
I got to the course a little early so I grabbed my clubs out of the car and hit a bucket of balls on the range with all the other pros. I know that I must have looked like I was having a seizure swinging the clubs compared to the other guys. Nobody said anything and they even said hi to me. I really felt like I was living a dream hitting balls next to professional golfers. I think I might have hit a dozen decent shots because I was so nervous.
Once my guy got there he hit nine balls and we were off to see the course. It really was interesting to ride with a pro-golfer on a practice round. He would hit two balls off the tee. He would hit one draw to the left of the fairway and cut to the right. He just wanted to see the bounce of the ball once it hit. It was amazing to see how much control he had on the ball without even trying. We made a point to stop on every green but we didn’t tee off on every hole.
We got to the first green and he gave me his putter and told me to find out what the ball did. Seriously! I looked at him, took the putter, and almost pissed my pants. This time around this is for real. He told me that he had complete trust in me and that he was counting on me to read the putts correctly. Yeah, no pressure at all on me this week. This is such a dream come true that I can’t find the words for it. This would be like Bill Clinton coming to you to teach him how to pick up interns. I’m just saying!
It took us about four hours to finish driving around and checking out the course and how it played. We chatted a little bit but this was all business. He went out to his investors and talked them into putting up more money to pay for me and I have to come through. He mentioned that there are going to be more stops in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina that he might want me to go to with him. Yeah, he already wants me to keep following him around for the next few months. I first have to come through this week and keep him calm, relaxed and making putts.
We will sometimes be put under the gun and we have to come
through because it matters. We will
perform under pressure and succeed when we are doing what we love. When we find our passion we will still feel
the pressure, but we will love doing it.
We can’t stay doing what we’re doing if we hate it. We have to and we will go out and find our
passion because our happiness is worth it.
