Non-alcoholic beer

Posted by Riyach

I have almost 4 months of sobriety and it is going quite well.  I attend AA meetings about 3-5 times a week.  Within this time I have been consuming non-alcoholic beer.  I never have had more than one at a sitting and I do not drink on a daily basis.  In the past, nearly 4, months I have consumed about 3 six packs.  I like the taste of beer and I have to admit in the beginning weeks, when I wanted to drink, I grabbed a near beer and it saved me.  Am I just messing with myself?  I later found out that a lot of people in AA would recommend me quitting near beer and changing my sobriety date. Having a, occasional, non-alcoholic beer seems to be working for me in my sobriety.  Your thoughts.

Congratulations on your hard work!

As to you question - non-alcoholic beer does contain a small amount of alcohol, from max 0.1 percent to max. 0.5 percent alcohol by volume, compared to beer, which contains around 5% alcohol by volume. So you can see it's very low, nonetheless, it does contain alcohol and for the alcoholic, abstaining from all alcohol is the safest way to insure long-term sobriety. Buddy T writes a column for Aboutcom.Alcoholism and has been doing so since 1997. His article, "The Dangers of Non-Alcoholic Beer," talks about a study in the Journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, "that seems to support the theory that [non-alcoholic beer] can cause a relapse for recovery alcoholics."
