Non-12 Step Programs for Recovery from Alcoholism or Drug Addiction

Posted Feb 28 2011 10:49am

by Lisa Frederiksen

Sometimes people seeking recovery or wanting something long-term to help maintain recovery are not as comfortable with a 12-step program as others. I wanted to share some information on one non-12 step recovery program to give you a sense of how it works. I have also included a link to information on others at the end of this post

Women For Sobriety (WFS )

As the name implies, this is a program for women and is based on: “positive thinking, metaphysics, meditation, group dynamics, and pursuit of health through nutrition.” WFS’s “New Life Program,” is based on 13 affirmations as follows:

  1. I have a life threatening problem that once had me.
  2. Negative thoughts destroy only myself.
  3. Happiness is a habit I will develop.
  4. Problems bother me only to the degree I permit them to.
  5. I am what I think.
  6. Life can be ordinary, or it can be great.
  7. Love can change the course of my world.
  8. The fundamental object of life is emotional and spiritual growth.
  9. The past is gone forever.
  10. All love given returns.
  11. Enthusiasm is my daily exercise.
  12. I am a competent woman and have much to give life.
  13. I am responsible for myself and my actions.

For more information for how the affirmations are used, how to access their online chat rooms, and/or a better understanding of the WFS, visit their website .
