Is alcohol the cause

Posted by keesh

Im a 38 yr old overweight woman with very swollen feet, ankles and legs. Im a very heavy alcohol drinking and Im pretty sure this is probably the cause. However, I have not had a drink in 3 days and I've noticed that the swelling has increased. Please help me. I know that the drinking must stop but I'm not even sure if this is the reason. 2 years ago before I started the heavy drinking my Doctor told me I was healthy as a horse but now I'm not so sure. Is swollen legs, feet and ankles a symptom of alcohol abuse?

I cannot provide a diagnosis.

I can share some information, however... when a person drinks more than their brains and body (namely liver) can process, the excess stays in the system -- especially in body tissue high in water content and highly vascularized (lots of blood vessels). This can cause many problems, including those like you've described. Again, however, I am not making a diagnosis.

To learn more about drinking too much and what that causes, you may wish to look at my blog, http://www.BreakingTheCycles.com, and these other resource websites, hbo.com/addiction and http://www.rethinkingdrinking.niaaa.nih.gov/

Originally it was thought that alcohol was the reason many people suffered from rosacea, but it turns out not to be the case. No one knows the actual cause.  Drinking alcohol can, however, worsen the symptoms. Other factors to avoid, if possible, include stress, direct sun and wind exposure, extreme heat or cold, spicy foods, and skin care products containing alcohol.
