If you are living with an alcoholic husband, you are well aware of the many excuses he has to drink alcohol. He isn’t fooling anybody, except himself. As a psychiatrist, I hear a lot of complaints from spouses of alcoholics like, “Every time I turn around, he’s drinking”. Many alcoholics hide their drinking, but there are so many “acceptable” reasons in our society for drinking alcohol, it is hardly necessary. Here are 9 typical examples of your alcoholic husband creating opportunities to drink even more (and may be why he is in this “pickle” in the first place):
Business dinners (this is a very common excuse)
Going to parties
Watching sports (football)
Unwind with wine at dinner
Going to pubs (if you live in England. Ireland etc)
These are all examples of how one’s lifestyle can be centered around alcohol. Alcoholism recovery almost always requires a change in lifestyle. Drinking buddies and activities must be given up. If you are living with an alcoholic, you are aware that your husband’s main extracurricular activity is drinking alcohol (his one and only hobby!).
People with a drinking problem are very resistant to altering their lifestyle. It takes hard work and motivation to change. To succeed in alcoholism recovery means surrounding yourself with people who live a sober lifestyle.
Learning to live without alcohol is similar to an athlete recovering from a serious injury that requires a major lifestyle change. Grief and depression may occur initially. A supportive environment (which often includes a 12 step program and support from family and friends) as well as learning new coping skills lead to success in sobriety.
