Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy — the Brain Can Change!

NPR ran a story this morning, “ Philanthropist Provides Care That the Pentagon Won’t ,” about Project Share. It is a program founded by Bernie Marcus, Home Depot magnate and philanthropist, to help brain damaged soldiers — those who suffer no outside scars but rather traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) caused by multiple concussions.
This story is amazing on so many fronts, but I am sharing it because it shows what cognitive rehabilitation therapy can do to “heal”/change the brain. There is no “one-size-fits-all” treatment for addiction. Something like cognitive rehabilitation therapy just might help a recovering addict/alcoholic, a person who also suffers from a brain injury. In their case, it’s the chronic, often relapsing, brain disease of addiction. But the big take-away from this program is the fact that the brain can “heal”/change.
