Can Your Alcoholic Husband Quit Drinking On His Own?

Posted Nov 10 2010 7:59am

Can your alcoholic husband quit drinking on his own? The answer is probably not. If it were easy to quit drinking, Alcoholics Anonymous would never have been developed and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs would not be a thriving industry. It is very tough for someone to give up an addiction whether it is an alcohol or drug addiction, food, sex, or gambling addiction.

Here are 5 reasons it is important for your alcoholic spouse to get professional help: 1. Your alcoholic husband if he quits drinking abruptly may experience alcohol withdrawal which can be life threatening and should be done under the care of a medical professional, especially if your alcoholic spouse has been drinking every day to excess.

2. Your alcoholic husband has probably been in strong denial about his alcohol problem including the perception that he thinks he is control of his drinking. Trying to control what he has shown you he can’t control rarely works. Quitting drinking is NOT a matter of will power alone.

3. Alcohol relapse is a common part of recovery. Learning from an alcohol relapse and putting new coping skills to work is the key to recovery. Your alcoholic spouse can learn new coping skills if he is actively engaged in a 12-step program and/or is going to therapy. Your alcoholic husband will be considered a “dry drunk” if he just quits drinking.

4. Other mental health issues like an underlying Anxiety Disorder, depression, or insomnia may need to be addressed. If your alcoholic husband has been attempting to self-medicate, then his chances of sobriety is greatly enhanced by proper treatment of his symptoms by a professional.

5. Your alcoholic husband will most likely require a drastic change in life- style in order to succeed in sobriety. Drinking buddies, Happy Hours, “partying” with friends need to be given up. It can be very frightening to face this void. A rehab program provides support and the learning tools to begin a healthier life. Alcoholics Anonymous meetings provide support to your alcoholic spouse and can also help teach him other ways to cope with life stresses without relying on alcohol.
