Alcohol Treatment Center Orange CountyAlcohol's effect on personal, professional, and emotional success is undisputed; but many people are unaware of some of the physical effects it can have. Some lesser-known facts about alcohol include:

  1. It has been found that one shot of alcohol provides almost twice the amount of Calories per gram as proteins or carbohydrates - while providing few to no nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and protein. Just a shot of vodka, unmixed, contains over 100 Calories.
  2. A shot of beer can give you 6-15 calories, or over 200 calories per beer, while red wine can give you 31 Calories, or over 100 calories per glass. For heavy drinkers, alcohol can account for as much as 1/4 to 1/2 of the calories expended in a day, leading to obesity and poor nutrition.
  3. Alcohol causes your blood sugar level to rise significantly. When you drink, your body's main priority is to rid the body of alcohol, at the expense of the normal regulation of blood sugar. Over time, this can cause insulin resistance, resulting in high blood sugar.
  4. For the above reasons, if you suffer from diabetes and are also an alcohol or someone who binge drinks, you need to check with your doctor; while alcoholism can be hazardous to long-term physical health in non-diabetics, it can be an immediate threat to diabetics.
  5. Alcohol can also increase your blood pressure. Studies have found that when high blood pressure and diabetes are co-morbid, the health risks are doubled as compared to individuals who don't have diabetes.
