Are you married to an alcoholic? Whether you are married to an alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife, you must wonder how serious is their alcohol problem anyway?
Questions that go through people’s minds are :
Is your alcoholic spouse hurting their health, is their alcohol problem getting worse, why don’t they seem drunk after drinking so much, are they even thinking about the family anymore or just thinking about alcohol? There are 3 stages of alcoholism. Which stage of alcoholism is your alcoholic spouse at?
Early stage: The typical early stage starts out as drinking to unwind. Drinking becomes an escape and is used to boost their mood or relieve stress. Patients in my psychiatric practice will tell me they drink to “forget” their troubles.
Middle stage: The middle stage is defined as needing to drink more and more to get the same “buzz”. Your alcoholic spouse won’t admit out loud they have an alcohol problem, but the thought is in the back of their mind. Their brain is alcohol dependent and they will get withdrawal symptoms if they stop drinking alcohol. Black outs and hangovers are common.
Late stage or end stage: The late stage is very serious. Alcoholic spouses are literally obsessed with drinking alcohol. Nothing else matters to them. Your alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife is now showing signs of malnutrition (especially B1 vitamin deficiency). There are liver problems, sometimes pancreas problems, anemia, shakiness etc. There are usually legal problem and always relationship problems. They have withdrawn and send time drinking or seeking alcohol. a medical professional must be involved in “detox” or your spouse could die if they were to go through alcohol withdrawal on their own.
