Alcoholic Spouse? Is Your Spouse’s Alcohol Problem Your Fault?

Many people married to an alcoholic spouse (alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife) blame their spouse’s alcohol problem on themselves. Is is classic behavior for an alcoholic to blame his/her alcohol problem on someone else and not take responsibility. Here are 3 examples of what an alcoholic spouse may say:
“If you didn’t stress me out so much, I wouldn’t be drinking so much.”
“If you didn’t bring up our finances every second, I wouldn’t need to drink to relax.”
“If you quit threatening to leave me all the time, I wouldn’t blow up and leave the house every time we have an argument.” (of course, he drinks excessively when he leaves and comes home plastered).
Your spouse’s alcoholic problem is not your fault!
