According to a recent paper published in Lancet, a British Medical Journal, alcohol is rated overall more harmful than heroin and cocaine. Professor Nutt assessed a number of factors- 9 criteria that assessed the harmful impact of that substance on the individual and 7 criteria that assessed the harmful impact of that substance on society. The substances evaluated included alcohol, cocaine, heroin, marijuana, tobacco, mushrooms, ecstasy, LSD.
The harm to the individual included the effects of the substance on different organ systems, loss of relationships etc. and the harm to society included socioeconomic cost such as healthcare, crime, social service, family conflict etc. Professor Nutt who conducted this study has formed the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs.
Here are his surprising conclusions that are relevant to your alcoholic husbandor alcoholic wife:
Alcohol, heroin, and crack were the most harmful to others whereas heroin,crack, and meth were the most harmful to the individual followed by alcohol.
Alcohol was considered the most harmful overall. (LSD, ecstasy, and mushrooms scored close to the bottom and pain pills were not included in this study).
