Alcoholic Spouse? Break the Domestic Violence Cycle

Do you have an alcoholic alcoholic husband ? If so, there is a much higher chance that you are a victim of domestic violence than if you were married to someone without an alcohol problem. Guess what? it’s not just the alcoholic husband that puts his partner at risk for the domestic violence cycle. An alcoholic wife comes with serious risks for domestic abuse as well.

What are the actual domestic violence statistics?

According to a study at University of Texas School of Public Health in Dallas, a wife of an alcoholic has triple the risk of showing signs of physical abuse from her alcoholic husband and a husband of an alcoholic wife has double the chance of showing signs of physical abuse from his alcoholic wife. The study appears in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

Rita Smith, executive director of the National Coalition against Domestic Violence in Denver proposes that the alcoholic women in a physically abusive relationships may be using alcohol to self medicate.

Remember, your safety and your children’s safety comes first. You need to do whatever it takes to be safe. Your alcoholic spouse needs help. Sometimes, separating yourself from the situation, possibly getting the police or legal system involved, ensures your safety and is a strong message to your alcoholic spouse to get the help she/he needs.
