Are you married to an alcoholic spouse? If so, you are probably in the vicious cycle of arguing with your alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife to stop drinking. They come home plastered, you get angry and confront your spouse. All that does is perpetuate tension and bad feelings.
You are probably tired of the all the broken promises from your alcoholic spouse about quitting drinking. The holidays are a time where self-pity about being married to an alcoholic spouse really kicks in. Instead of going down the road of self-pity, try to concentrate on something you can actually influence: YOU.
Here are 3 tips to start concentrating on yourself instead of wasting your energy monitoring how much your alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife is drinking:
Tip 1: Go to Al-Anon. It is the best place to bond with other people that are living with an alcoholic. You will feel supported and learn healthier ways to cope with your situation.
Tip 2: Reach out to friends and relatives. Confide in those you trust what is happening at home. The secret you have guarded about having an alcoholic spouse will most likely not be a big surprise to your confidantes. Get some of your emotional needs met from those that care about you.
Tip 3: If you are dependent on an alcoholic spouse financially, go back to school or consider working full time. If your alcoholic spouse is the primary caretaker of your kids, start playing a much more active role with the kids. Slowly, but surely start shifting the power of the relationship to yourself.
Don’t let your alcoholic spouse control your life with their drinking habits. You have been doing this and it ends up hurting you. Take action to set boundaries and break any codependent patterns. You know what might happen? Your alcoholic spouse may decide to stop drinking afterall. If not, you will have already started the road to your own recovery.
