Are you married to an alcoholic husband? If so, I already know you have a stressful life full of chaos and disappointment. He may have even wrecked your holiday and you are left wondering how you put up with your alcoholic spouse on a daily basis. Here are 3 quick coping tips that if you put to use, will ultimately improve your mood because you will be doing something about your situation.
1. Don’t fool yourself that your alcoholic husband will stop drinking alcohol for you. The only way someone is successful with sobriety is when they decide to stop drinking alcohol.
2. Don’t blame yourself for your alcoholic spouse’s excessive drinking. He has a disease. He may say your nagging or depression have driven him to drink to relieve his stress. This is an excuse. His brain is alcohol dependent and this is not your fault.
3. Quit rescuing your alcoholic husband. Do not bail him out of jail, do not make excuses to your family and friends why he isn’t participating in the family, and do not call in sick to his work fro him. Let him suffer the consequences from his excessive drinking. Quitting your codependency role (enabling) is the most powerful motivator for an alcoholic to stop drinking alcohol.
If you follow these coping tips, you are putting yourself in charge of your life and putting him in charge of his excessive drinking. Alcoholism is his disease, but is known as a family disease because of the impact of his disease on every family member. If you get help for your codependency through therapy and Al-anon, he is much more likely to get help for his alcoholism.
