I was thrilled to see page 14 of a new workbook, “The Mindboggling Workbook,” created by the Dana Foundation as a fun-filled activity book about the brain for children in grades K-3 (ages 5-9). The workbook provides an introduction to how the brain works, what the brain does, its importance and how to take care of it.
But what thrilled me about page 14 (see below) was the matter-of-fact inclusion of alcoholism and drug abuse as but 2 of the conditions that affect the brain. Not anonymous or secretive or shameful — just right out there — boom! Alcoholism and drug abuse affect the brain, like other conditions, including ADHD, blindness and pain.
It is marvelous to see a product that so clearly teaches children about the brain — a significant step in the effort to provide this new brain and addiction related research to children long before they consider taking their first drink.
