12-Step and Self Help Groups – How to Find One Relevant to You and Your Concern(s)

Posted Nov 12 2009 10:02pm

by Lisa Frederiksen

I was not aware there are 12-step and self-help groups for people with mental illnesses similar to AA, for example, until this week. A friend brought them to my attention. I went searching and sure enough — not only mental illness but just about every illness, condition, status…  and this website, American Self-Help Group Clearinghouse, Self-Help Group Sourcebook Online, gathers most, if not all.

Quoting from their home page, “This guide has been developed to act as your starting point for finding every type of national, international, model and online self-help support group that is available. The self-help groups, contained in the database that you can access by keyword in the box at the bottom, can help you find and/or start a support group in your community. Local self-help group clearinghouses can also often help you find or form a group. (For other online support groups and resources, please consult the annotated Directory of Online Resources available at http://psychcentral.com/resources ).”

What a resource! Please pass it along.
