what could be the cause of sharp shooting pain at the sides of both knees only when kneeling ?

 I have a sharp,burning shooting pain at the sides of both knees when kneeling on a hard surface.I have had one side trouble me for close to 10 years but it wasn't too bad. Just recently the other side started.Even the skin at th esides of the knees is a bit numb now....all the time. Could it be a pinched nerve?Is there a procedure or cure for it ?
