As we all age, we are facing the inevitable. Many of you are probably dealing with caring for your parent or other loved one. . As one who has recently experienced this, I can offer some advice. Here are my nuggets;
Just call to say you love him/her
Know thyself and what you can handle and do what you can do without comparing to others
Prepare yourself emotionally
Help the person prepare emotionally and practically
Care for the caregiver, if that is you, care for yourself
Talk with family, early and often for the purpose of deciding which family will do what or if professionals should be hired but do not set this in stone. Changes in the person’s condition and /or the lives of the family will create the need for reevaluation
Continue your life as best as you can
Make sure to have interactions with other family members that do not just deal with care giving.
