This Week in Elder News - 1 August 2009

Posted Aug 01 2009 10:38pm

In this regular weekend feature you will find links to news items from the preceding week related to elders and aging, along with whatever else catches my fancy that I think you might like to know. Suggestions are welcome with, however, no promises of publication.

110-Year-Old Woman As I learned at the Age Boom Academy conference in New York a couple of months ago, this woman, Bernice Madigan, is the embodiment of researchers' goal in extending healthy life for everyone into old, old age. Perhaps one day it will be so. [3:11 minutes] ( Hat tip to Tamar of Mining Nuggets )

White House Photos Did you know there is an official White House Flickr site? There are albums of photographs from events such as this recent visit to Washington by Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan.

There are collections of Michelle Obama, behind-the-scenes shots of the president's overseas trips, meetings with dignitaries, speeches, talking on the phone at his Oval Office desk and so many others that it leaves one to wonder what, if anything in the president's life, is not photographed. Start here on the main page.

Are You Old Enough? There are probably millions of young folks who are puzzled by this cartoon. As Cowtown Pattie of Texas Trifles noted when she emailed it, you need to be of a certain era to appreciate it.

Simon's Cat Simon Tofield knows cat behavior to a tee and his cartoon animations show up way too infrequently to suit me. This new one is titled Fly Guy. How many times will you watch it? [2:23 minutes] ( Hat tip to Melinda Applegate )

That's it today, a short Elder News edition. It was so hard and took so long to write the last three Time Goes By posts that I forgot to collect links and even missed two days of reading The New York Times. There will be more next week.

Oh, wait, wait, wait. This just in:

Gotta Dance Thanks again to Cowtown Pattie of Texas Trifles, we have a trailer for the movie, Gotta Dance. It's about the New Jersey Nets' first elder dance team - 12 women and one man ranging in age from 59 to 83.

The movie has been around for a year or so, but screenings continue throughout the U.S. and you can find dates here along with a lot more information about the dancers and the film.
