The right drug for you

Posted Jun 10 2009 6:43pm
Today there are many chronic conditions which are alleviated by the prescribing of a drug. Each patient is unique, but the medicine may not be uniquely prescribed for them. Each time you take a pill, the pill doesn't know who you are or what your special needs may be. Additionally, because the way medications act in our bodies can change as we age, it becomes increasingly important to consult your pharmacist and physician before taking any medicine to make sure it will be the best for you.
Many chronic conditions today have a vast array of available drugs that can be prescribed for you. For instance, pain is an area where medicine is used widely to bring relief to the sufferer. Whether the pain is chronic or short term, you have many options. However, some options may not be recommended depending on your age, such as Darvocet®, which is a weak pain reliever of the opioid class. In patients of advanced age, this medication has been shown to cause neurological side effects when used for long-term periods of time. To compound the problem, Darvocet® has also been shown to be inferior to other current pain medications which have fewer side-effects. Other medicines used in the treatment of pain may also cause problems for the elderly user. For instance chronic use of NSAIDS like Advil® may cause peptic ulcers and worsen kidney problems.
These were just some examples of what can happen when you don't get the right drug for you. As a healthcare consumer, it is in your best interest to take the right drug for your particular need and condition. Next time you bring in a prescription or are looking for an over-the-counter medicine, make sure to seek the advice of your local healthcare provider, such as a Senior Care Pharmacist, who will be able to guide you in selecting the right medication for you.
