Red lumps on first finger joint. not painful

My mother, in her 80's but in great shape, has red lumps forming on the first finger joints of several fingers.The lumps are not painful but they are very red and look like they are disfiguring her fingers. They only came up about 3 months ago. A doctor injected one of them with cortisone and the redness went away for a few weeks but the redness has now returned. Any suggestions?
