Life Renewment Groups for Retiring Career Women

Posted Sep 12 2008 1:50pm

Are you a professional career woman thinking of leaving the post you've put your heart and soul into? Do you think you might be falling off a precipice when you do?

Helen Dennis and Bernice Bratter, retirement professionals, just published a book for you. Project Renewment: The First Retirement Model for Career Women demonstrates how to start a "renewment" group. Women who are 60+, the first generation to have worked outside the home in great numbers, have few models for how to enter this new stage of life. What do you say when people ask for your business card? Rather than biting the head off the person asking, as if she had enquired, "How do you like your new job as a topless dancer?" we can reframe our thinking. "Our challenge is to create an identity -- with or without a card -- that continues to have personal value and meaning," write Bratter and Dennis.

They describe "Project Renewment" as a "grassroots movement designed to encourage and support women as they contemplate and move into the great post-career adventure." The book gives us heartfelt quotes from the women in the groups they facilitated about many topics that will resonate with you. Here's a few:

I Only Cry at the Movies
Addicted to Power
Less Steam in My Engine
What do I Wear When I'm Not in a Business Suit?
The Queen of Multi-Tasking is Taking a Break
What is Productivity Anyway?

The authors also offer the reader a helpful guide and resources about how to start our own groups, from interviewing prospective members, to qualities of good candidates, to group format, facilitator responsibilites, expectations for members, and good topics to discuss.

Would you like to start or participate in such a group? Email me at Karma@LifeSpringCoaching.com if you would.
