Hi nancy j.

I used to practice as a GI surgeon and endoscopist.

Treating GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) can come in many forms.  Based on not having any information about who the generic nexium is for - the severity, the cause (hiatal hernia, positional, acid over production, bile reflux etc.) it is hard to say...

But, I can tell you that generic nexium is esomeprazole - a "proton pump inhibitor."  As such, if the reflux symptoms are caused by acid reflux, it should be just as efficacious as the brand name in reducing stomach acid production.  You should be aware that there are complication of being on stomach acid production long term and that there ARE alternatives.
