Dementia is the progressive and long-term decline in a person's cognitive
functions. This decline is caused by damage or disease in the body beyond what might be expected due to normal aging of the body. Dementia is mostly found in the geriatric population, but can be also found in any stage of adulthood. Dementia is a non-specific illness syndrome, in which the affected areas of cognition may be attention, language, memory, and even problem solving. An affected person may be disoriented in time (not knowing what date or time it is), in place (not knowing where they currently are), and in person (not recognizing those around them, or themselves). Although often treatable, Dementia is usually due to causes which are progressive and often incurable.
