Free-agent NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson has been charged with one count of misdemeanor domestic battery by the Broward County State Attorney in Florida.
If convicted, Johnson could face up to one year in Broward County Jail, according to a release obtained by NFL.com and NFL Network on Wednesday.
Johnson is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday and is expected to file a written plea of not guilty, the county attorney said. He's not expected to appear in person at the court.
The charge stems from Johnson's Aug. 11 arrest in Davie, Fla., on a domestic violence charge, in which he was accused of head-butting his wife, Evelyn Lozada. The two had married on July 4, and Lozada filed for divorce three days later.
Johnson told police at the time that he and Lozada had accidently knocked heads during a "heated argument," which began after his wife found a receipt for condoms in their car.
Lozada was treated at a local hospital for a laceration on her forehead.
