The exact cause of Bell's palsy is unknown. However, it is thought that a viral infection of the facial nerve causes it to become inflamed, which compresses the nerve until the inflammation goes down. There is some evidence that the STD herpes simplex (the virus that causes cold sores) is often responsible.

People who have STD Herpes simplex virus infection are more likely to be struck with Bell's Palsy at least once in there life time. Tell your friends that you know if they have herpes to get check ups regularly and keep a close eye on new symptoms, even if they seem petty,to them there doctor might think differently.
