Are You an Internet-Savvy 60+?

Posted Sep 12 2008 1:41pm

How many of your friends do not use the Internet? How does this affect your relationship with them? For me, I'm less apt to get in touch, because it's so much harder to call, leave a message, wait until the person calls back....So much easier to drop an email message when the mood strikes. Also, my Internet-less friends don't get to read my blog, or receive my inspirational email messages that go out to my whole mailing list...and on and on. They are less a part of my life and I'm less a part of theirs.

Journalist Jane Glenn Haas wrote in her article "Internet domination changing generations" that 73% of American adults and 35% of those over 65 use the Internet.

New York Times columnist Mark Leibovich said "Computers have become something of a cultural marker -- in politics and the real world...Proficiency with them suggests a basic familiarity with the day-to-day experience of most Americans - just as ignorance to them can suggest someone is 'out of touch' or 'old.' " What do you think of that? Do you agree or not?

Third Agers are using the 'net for social networking, news, and playing games, shopping, buying airline and amusement tickets, researching what to buy through Consumer Reports, the weather, stock market quotes, and on and on. It's no longer the dominion of 30-somethings.
