special time for siblings

Posted Mar 30 2010 10:30am

Emma is now seeing Luke's counselor for anxiety and coping with being a sibling of ADHD. {If you missed the story, read it here: another diagnosis .} In one of our recent sessions, Ms. K, our wonderful counselor, suggested Emma and I have some mommy & me time -- something Luke cannot butt in on, he has to be completely otherwise engaged.

Last time she asked Emma to name some things she'd like to do just the two of us. She came up with:
  • eating chocolate
  • shopping (only for her, I cannot look at anything for me or anyone else)
  • visiting dogs
  • picture-taking excursion
  • etc.
For our first mommy & me trip, we went for the chocolate eating. {I'd be fine with that every time, and I think Emma would too.} I had the best piece of chocolate cake (Kaluha Torte actually) a few months ago, with my mom, at a local German restaurant. I was also told of another cafe just a block from there with a great desert case. And, one more block over, there are two chocolate specialty shops creating truffles, fudge and gelato.  All of this is in downtown Black Mountain, NC , a little town on the outskirts of Asheville that's been a tourists' hub since the 1950s. This is where we were headed.

We stopped at the cafe first since I could also get a sandwich there. Chocolate for lunch is fine with me, but my stomach wouldn't like it. They had a wait and the desert case didn't look worth the wait to me. I knew there was something better out there. So we walked over to the German restaurant hoping they'd have the Kaluha Torte that day, no such luck. Then we walked over to the bakery but nothing chocolaty there either. I had a turkey sandwich and got a bag of pastries for breakfast the next morning (I had to bring my boys something). We went over to one of the chocolate shops, and each got a piece of chocolate for the road. Black Mountain was a bust and we were headed to another bakery in Asheville I knew wouldn't disappoint, Filo.

Here's a pictorial of our time at Filo.
