noticing differences

Posted Mar 17 2010 5:52am
Luke and his cousin Hannah are very close. We actually shared a house for a while when Hannah was born (she is 14 months younger than Luke) and then they stayed in the care of Grandma most days while my sister and I were at work, until Luke started Kindergarten. Until that point, they were like brother and sister. People even asked if they were twins when they were toddlers. Now that Hannah is also in school and has moved to a new house on the other side of town, they don't get to spend much time together. So last Friday night Hannah came over for a sleep over. Luke was thrilled. Hannah was thrilled. There was great anticipation.

As time went on, I noticed Hannah was becoming aware of the differences in Luke. She has asked before if he's sick, "is that why he takes medicine every day?" Not knowing how to explain it to a 6 year old other than pointing out his differences, I paused and my sister jumped in and told her it is just like her daddy taking vitamins every day. Good enough for now, I thought.

Hannah is noticing more than just the daily medication though. She seems to study him when he is hyper or when he can't quite come to grips with not getting what he wants. She can't understand why he is so obsessed with Lego Star Wars and computer and Nintendo DS. She asked me Saturday morning why Luke never wants to play anything else. She is very smart and very observant and she is noticing his differences. And that's okay. Some day she will also notice his talents as well.
They had a blast together, by the way.

Hannah was quick to ask to sleep somewhere other than with Luke when she realized he was too excited to be still and go to sleep. In the morning they were singing and dancing together and the sound of their laughter and joy filled the house.

{Big sister Emma took these pictures. She is really into taking photos too these days and I am all for that. Those are Nerf dart shooters, by the way.}
