Lies or Blinks?

Posted Nov 17 2008 9:04pm

Dear Teachers,
Thought you might be interested in this paper about a very real hazard with ADHD people. This is one reason why sometimes they may not have heard you. Its not a conscious decision to not pay attention or that they choose to do something else instead of what they should be doing. Its a weird, involuntary goneness, followed by coming back not knowing that you’ve been gone. Remember the saying, It’s better to look bad than stupid? Often kids who have a Blink, will act out rather than admit they dont have a clue whats going on.
Also, if they are SURE they told you something or did something and you know they didn’t, perhaps this is why. The things that they think about during a blink are filed in the mind as real, not as ponderings, so to them, they really happened. So, if it happens that once again, your student missed the instructions or is claiming they turned in an assignment, take this phenomenon into account and give them the benefit of the doubt. Just start over and say it again without blaming. Thanks, Janet.
