How to help your ADHD/LD child cope with failure

Posted Aug 24 2008 9:56pm

We all know that every child cannot win every time. In any competition there will inevitably be a winner and loser(s). When ADHD children are on the losing end of an activity they are more prone to overreact. So, what is the best way to help your child if he is on the losing end of a basketball game, doesn't get picked for a certain team or performs poorly on his math quiz? ADDitude Magazine has addressed this issue in an article entitled Helping ADD Kids Understand the Upside of Failure: Eight illuminating lessons for children with attention deficit disorder who face challenges in life. The article stresses the importance of placing the "failure" in perspective and helping raise your child's self esteem. It goes on to offer eight ways in which to do both. You may also want to read this post in which I discussed 50 ways to say well done .
