Diet not the cause of ADHD in children

Posted Nov 17 2008 9:04pm

I could have told you that much.  I have tried diet adjustments in the past.  With the exception of a few fruits it didn’t seem to make a difference in my stepson and with my middle son it made no difference at all. (Minus sugary foods, which of course made him just a bit more hyper than normal.)  The medical community finally agrees with what a lot of parents with ADHD kids have known for a long time.  Unfortunately, it seems that the medical community is up to its old trick of simply shifting the blame to other things they don’t like, rather than going after the real causes of the issue.

In a news release posted on May 29th, 2008, which does not cite specific doctors or researchers, it was found that: “Genetics, brain function and parental actions such as smoking may be just as important.” The press release also goes on to state that “A review of scientific evidence found only a minority of children were actually affected by what they eat. A combination of food, genetics and environmental toxins are more likely to be involved, with no single factor to blame.”

While I’m not arguing with brain function as an issue in the behavior of children and adults with ADD/ADHD alike, where in the world does smoking fit into this?  The press release goes on to state plainly that they simply don’t know if this is the case or not, but as a simple matter of course, the medical community just has to blame smoking or contact with second hand smoke as a reason for everything from cancer to ringworm.

Please note that I do not condone smoking even though I myself am a smoker.  I do my best to completely remove that habit from my children.  I do not smoke in my home under any circumstances and do my best to make sure that the air they breathe is as clean as possible. As a rule of thumb, I also smoke downwind of any non-smoker.  I am also aware that there are health risks associated with smoking.  What I’m saying here is…  Can’t we come up with a better reason than smoking?

Ladies and gentlemen of the medical community, I beseech you. Please stop trying to make up for the fact that in the 20’s, doctors promoted smoking.  That was a long time ago.  The fact is that there isn’t a miracle cure.  There is also no malignant cause of all afflictions.  Smoking is what it is.  The rate of diagnosis of ADHD has increased steadily even as the rate of smokers has decreased.  This should tell you something.
