Make Sure You Use the Bathroom First...

Posted Feb 29 08 9:19pm by Stephanie B.

Here's a helpful acupuncture tip - go to the bathroom and clear your bladder immediately before your session. Once I made the mistake of not doing so and I had to go really, really badly, while I was stuck on the table with needles all over me. I had to call loudly until someone heard me and then my acupuncturist had to quickly remove my needles so I could make a mad dash to the bathroom in my hospital gown.

I think, also, that sometimes when certain needles are inserted it can stimulate the bladder. So now I try to go right before my session if at all possible!

Nirmala, that same thing happened to me. 30 mins into my hour long massage i had to go really badly, but i just had to suffer through it. Kinda messed up the whole relaxation vibe i was going for

You bring up a really great point Stephanie.  My lovely receptionists invite my patients to use the washroom while they wait for me.

Have a great day.

Good recommendation.  That actually applies for any medical appointments as they always take longer than expected, and bladders never like to cooperate.  :)

Stephanie, I haven't had this experience with acupuncture before but I've had it with massage. In the past, I'd simply lie there and suffer till the massage was over but now, I'm not afraid to end a session early to keep my bladder from suffering!

I always try to drink water at least an hour prior to my acupuncture session, but for me, the trick is making sure it isn't too much. Usually, if it's more than eight ounces, I find that my hamster bladder suffers multiple times in a short duration.

Oh my, you learned the hard way! I guess it should be a cardinal rule that acupunturists warn you to empty your bladder before they start. Perhaps your acupuncturist will let people know now that you've brought the matter to attention!
